ABOUT NINETY DEGREES

What is 90 Degrees -

Our organization, which is known as “Ninety Degrees (90D),” is a virtual legal clinic providing pro bono legal services to the marginalized section of the society. It is driven by a core principle: Access to Justice for All. We believe that financial limitations should never be a barrier to legal representation. Our mission is to ensure that every individual, regardless of their circumstances, has the opportunity to receive legal support and achieve justice. We are dedicated to offering (legal) assistance to marginalized, vulnerable, and underserved populations.

The sections of the society as enlisted under Section 12 of the Legal Services Authorities Act are entitled for free legal services, they are :

(a) A member of a Scheduled Caste or Scheduled Tribe;
(b) A victim of trafficking in human beings or begar as referred to in Article 23 of the Constitution;
(c) A woman or a child;
(d) A mentally ill or otherwise disabled person;
(e) A person under circumstances of undeserved want such as being a victim of a mass disaster, ethnic violence, caste atrocity, flood, drought, earthquake or industrial disaster; or
(f) An industrial workman; or
(g) In custody, including custody in a protective home within the meaning of clause (g) of Section 2 of the Immoral Traffic (Prevention) Act, 1956(104 of 1956); or in a juvenile home within the meaning of clause(j) of Section 2 of the Juvenile Justice Act, 1986 (53 of 1986); or in a psychiatric hospital or psychiatric nursing home within the meaning of clause (g) of Section 2 of the Mental Health Act, 1987(14 of 1987);or
(h) a person in receipt of annual income less than the amount mentioned in the following schedule (or any other higher amount as may be prescribed by the State Government), if the case is before a Court other than the Supreme Court, and less than Rs 5 Lakh, if the case is before the Supreme Court.

The Income Ceiling Limit has been prescribed u/S 12(h) of the Act for availing free legal services in different States.

Ananya Shrivastava

PROJECT MANAGER

Ananya Srivastava is a fifth-year law student at NLU Nagpur with a keen interest in economics, finance, and public policy. She strongly believes in democratizing knowledge and using education to empower individuals to make informed decisions. For the past two years, she has been a Research Associate at Project Neeti, which aims to educate marginalized communities about finance, law, education schemes, and health schemes.

As the Project Manager of Ninety Degrees, she is driven by a deep-seated desire to make a positive impact on the community. Her experience with the Cyber Crimes Fraud Drive had a lasting impact on her. First, she witnessed the widespread lack of internet literacy, and second, she observed the general despondency of citizens toward the justice system. Her involvement with Ninety Degrees stems from her commitment to fostering empathy and promoting social justice among law students. Through Ninety Degrees, she aims to advance the goal of ensuring access to justice for all. Additionally, she seeks to understand how to run impactful initiatives by engaging various stakeholders.

Shejal Agarwal

PROJECT MANAGER

Shejal Agarwal is a final-year law student at National Law University, Nagpur, with a passion for litigation and a strong commitment to social justice. The mission of Ninety Degrees, rooted in the principle of "Access to Justice for All," deeply resonates with her values and aspirations. Having firsthand experience in working with marginalized and underserved communities, she is passionate about bridging the gap between legal aid and those who need it the most. She is particularly drawn to the structure of Ninety Degrees, which not only provides legal assistance but also cultivates a culture of pro bono work among future lawyers, encouraging them to develop their research and advocacy skills while serving society.

As the project manager of Ninety Degrees providing legal aid to marginalized communities, she brings hands-on experience from her work with the Delhi High Court Legal Aid Cell. Her background in managing legal aid projects, coupled with her deep empathy for underserved populations, uniquely positions her to contribute to Ninety Degrees. She is excited about the opportunity to lead initiatives, collaborate with like-minded professionals, and further this vital mission of creating a just and equitable society for all.
